Are Pickles Keto? (Vegan Keto Fried Pickles Recipe Included)

People began pickling cucumbers around 4,000 years ago. That was an obvious way to extend their shelf life and have something crunchy to eat during the time when there was no fresh produce. And thousands of years after we are still enjoying it. But are pickles keto-friendly?

Are there carbs in pickles?

Depending on the type of pickle and the brand, carbs in the end product may be different. For instance, if sugar was added to the brine.

However, overall, some brands will have as low as 1-gram of carbohydrates in pickles serving (and as high as 15-20g).

Dave’s Signature spicy pickles. 1 serving 7g of carbs due to high fructose corn syrup content.

You’ll have to read food labels carefully and avoid those brands that list sugar as an ingredient. Keto generally allows for 10–70 grams of net carbs per day (depending on how strict you are and how easy it is for your body to remain in ketosis).

Pickles are keto-friendly and typically made ingredients like water, salt, vinegar, and cucumbers. But once in a while, the list may include things like sugar or high fructose corn syrup. And those can hardly be called keto-friendly.

So if you are still wondering whether or not pickles will kick you out of ketosis, the answer is: “No, but…”

I crawled through numerous pickles options on Amazon and found particular option by Hengstenberg. It would be my personal choice while on keto. It has 10 calories and about 2g of net carbs per 1oz. Will pickles help with keto flu?

are pickles keto

Some athletes swear by pickle brine to be useful for restoring electrolytes supply after the sweaty workout. There is no evidence of that, however, if you enjoy pickle juice, a small amount may be a tasty (and cheaper) alternative to electrolyte water.

When we first get into ketosis, most of us experience an array of symptoms – from diarrhea to excessive urination. So we lose tons of liquids and electrolytes, crucial for our basic bodily functions (e.g., healthy heartbeat) along the way. While it’s good to stay hydrated during that time, it might make sense to refill sodium, potassium, and other nutrients. Pickle’s brine is high in sodium, calcium, potassium, Vitamin A, and more vitamins, minerals, and fiber. So it might not hurt drinking it, as long as it’s low in sugars. But there’s not much scientific evidence exploring the correlation between pickles and keto flu, so don’t overdo it. And be reasonable in your expectations about its efficiency.
